What Is Axe Throwing?
Axe throwing at The Hilt is when you walk into an axe throwing bay, grab a wooden axe with a sharp steel end piece, and throw it into a wooden target, aiming for bullseye. You compete against another axe thrower and the total score is counted to decide the winner. When you have this much fun, everyone’s going to feel like they won.
How Is It Organized?
A normal axe throwing session is 1 hour and 15 minutes when you include training time. Axe throwers get 20 minutes of practice with our expert coaches to warm up and throw axes. Here you’ll learn both single and two-handed throwing, like a true Viking. Then players throw an equal number of axes per round. These throws are scored by number of axes that stick to the wood and how close they are to the bullseye. The highest score gets named the Viking or Viqueen and has bragging rights for the rest of the day.
Is It Family Friendly?
The minimum age required to throw axes at The Hilt in York is 13. Any individual who is 13 or older will be trained to throw the axes weighing 1.6 kgs (3.5 lbs). Many families have had so much fun they walked out already planning their next trip back.
Is It Safe?
Yes, it’s very safe. All axe throwers are in a blocked off cage with pads above, below, and in front of the targets. The people watching stand behind a safe partition. We also have coaches who ensure safety rules are followed.
Can We Walk In?
Absolutely, you can. But we can’t promise any axe throwing bays will be open. It’s far more convenient for you to book online and ensure you have an axe throwing lane reserved.

Yes, these are sharp axes after all. A link will be attached to your invoice after your book your lane and you must sign your waiver electronically before arriving.
